It had been a long time since Susan had been completely alone. With David dead and her children grown, all there was for her to do was live her life for herself. Her long, impossibly alien life. Being around humans for so long, those fascinating, beautiful creatures had been too much of an influence on her. For so long she had forgotten that she wasn't going to die as quickly as anyone around her, and that she would likely outlive her children (for who knew if they would be able to regenerate or not?). Now though, alone in the universe again, she had time to think, to observe.

With a grocery bag in hand, Susan couldn't help but smile as the sky cleared over London. What a beautiful day this would be.

It's important to point out that it wasn't his fault that there was currently a Jadoon loose in a branch of Tescos. Yes, yes, okay he might have coaxed them there with a slightly illegal anti ionic pulse that he accidentally let off while trying to pick the right tinned peaches. But still. Entirely not his fault. At all.

It was due to that, however, that the Doctor now found himself running as fast as his feet would take him (which was really quite fast), through busy London streets.

The Jadoon had to have been around for some other reason, of course, even for them a boring old pulse wouldn't be enough to draw them down. So something else. Probably something important, and the Doctor pledged to actually think about it when he had time to stop running.

Which might be a while.

The opportunity, however, came far sooner than he expected.

Turning a corner, still at full speed, he soon found himself suddenly stopped as he collided hard with what appeared to be an old woman; her shopping bags ripping and their contents rolling over the street.

"Sorry!" he said, stopping to try and pick things up, only to drop them again. "Sorry. My fault. That'd be--" but he stopped, because without looking at her, without even having to, he knew.

Slowly, he glanced up, his mouth a little open.

"Oh," he said as he saw her face. "Hello."

It took Susan a touch longer to realize who had just bumped into her, for a few reasons. One, it had been so very long since the Doctor had a face that she was familiar with. Two, she had been so out of contact with her own people that recognizing them, in the back of her mind...well, she had gotten rusty. She had known that something was very wrong with Harold Saxon, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She had felt empty when the Time War happened, but she knew absolutely nothing of it. She had been cut off for so long, it was almost like being human.

And third, her eggs had just shattered on the ground.

"Oh damn. It's absolutely fine, really--" She cut herself off when he stared, staring right back. "Hello...have we met before? If we have, then I suppose it's really my fault for not--" And then, like that, it hits her, and a smile spreads on her lips.

"...Grandfather?"

A moment suddenly seemed like an eternity. The Doctor hadn't seen her in so long, he'd made himself forget about her, it was better that way. He lost everyone and she had to be lost too. It was the only was she would be safe, and if there were ever anything he could do, it was that.

For a while, the Judoon were entirely forgotten. Indeed everything was forgotten. Because there was just an old man staring at his long lost grandaughter that he thought he'd never see again.

His smile was still as wide, still as surprised.

"Susan."

Her smile and eyes widened in excitement, and she dropped the rest of her shopping bags. They didn't really matter, after all. Instead, she launched herself into a big hug, arms wrapped around his neck.

"Grandfather, it's been too long! Where the hell have you been hiding yourself?"
